Begin our first thematic unit: coming of age. Begin a pre-reading research project for The Outsiders. We will spend approximately four days in the library and four days in the computer lab. You will work in small groups on one of the seven chosen novel topics. You will gather research material for your topic and then use it to create a PowerPoint for presentation to the class. The research project handout contains all relevant details for each assigned topic. Continue our first thematic unit: coming of age. Discuss coming of age handout and anticipation guide for The Outsiders. Receive Chapter Note-Taking and Summary Prompts: use these for each of the twelve (12) chapters of the novel to follow and analyze character development, conflict(s), and theme. The first handout explains how you should take notes for each chapter, and the second handout is blank for you to take in-depth notes as you independently read in class. Be prepared for chapter quizzes after every two chapters. You will read one chapter approximately every two days in class. Occasionally, you may be required to bring the novel home.

Periodically, I may ask you to complete comprehension check entrance/exit slips on The Outsiders. You do not need to complete these on your own unless directed to do so by me. You may, however, use these to check your comprehension of the novel; if you have difficulty answering any of these questions, you should see me for extra help sessions. |

Explore informational text (non-fiction) using author biography passage. Anticipate a multiple choice and writing exam.
